Paragraph writing 2: The Stone

The use of stone in construction dates back to ancient times, as it was used to create sacred spaces. Later on, in Egypt and Syria, it was used to form the columns, lintels, floors and ceilings, but due to its weight, the ceilings in less important buildings were instead made of wood. Stone is a material that is used naturally, without it having been processed, mainly because of its strength and durability. This characteristic makes it difficult to quarry, to transport from one place to another and to cut it. The stone can adapt to almost every shape with sculptural treatment, it also can be cut in blocks to be use as entablature, barely using mortar. Despite stone being a very durable material, it lost popularity over time due to lighter and cheaper materials like brick becoming widely used. This material is very expensive, weak in tension and unstable if it is pushed at its angles, but its durability and beauty are worth it.
